Xinomavro

Xinomavro, TZEE-NOH-MAH-VROH, meaning literally “acid black,” a grape known for its dark color and its pronounced acidity. From the beginning, Xinomavro — a native Greek grape variety — has always represented a passion for Boutari. The first wine that Yiannis Boutari bottled — the first Greek red wine to be shipped in bottle — was made primarily from Xinomavro, with the addition of other local grapes. Today, the tradition continues with Boutari’s Naoussa (the leading exported red wine of Greece), a 100% Xinomavro named after the group’s original winery, and the Grande Reserve Naoussa, also 100% Xinomavro, made from 30-35 year-old vines and aged two years in French oak cask and then 2 years in bottle before release. For both of these wines, Boutari focuses on varietal expression, highlighting the grape’s natural spiciness, cinnamon, and cedar flavors, balanced acidity, and deep color and rich mouthfeel. The reserve will cellar well (12-15 years).
